Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure intended to reduce the amount of fat in various areas of the patient’s body. The Tumescent liposuction technique involves injecting a solution into the patient’s body which is used to break up the fatty tissue along the muscular wall. This allows for a suction device which is inserted into small incisions made to the patient’s body to remove the fat with greater ease. The wet and super wet methods of liposuction have evolved from this technique and they are the most commonly used today. The wet liposuction method occurs when a small amount of liquid is injected into the patient’s body usually less than that of the fat to be removed. The liquid contains local anesthetic along with fluid to contract blood vessels and a saline solution to break apart the fat cells. The super wet method is performed the same way except that the amount of fluid pumped into the body is usually equal to that of the amount of fat to be extracted. The evolution of these methods has resulted in smaller incision holes and far less invasive surgery resulting in a quicker and more comfortable recovery for the patient. Recently ultrasonic vibrations have been used in conjunction with Tumescent Liposuction to break up the fat and have gained popularity. It is commonly referred to as the Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction technique.
The time the procedure takes can vary greatly depending upon how much fat is to be removed and how many areas it is to be removed from. Tumescent surgeries can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. The cost of the procedure can also greatly vary depending upon numerous factors and can range anywhere from $1,000- $8,000 typically.
