Vaginal surgery is a plastic surgery procedure that tightens, rejuvenates or improves the overall aesthetic look of a women’s vagina. Vaginal surgery can also be used by transgender women and is referred to as a sex change or a gender reassignment.
There are two main types of vaginal surgeries. The first, referred to as vaginoplasty is intended to tighten and tone the vaginal walls. This is accomplished by removing excess lining and repairing the surrounding tissues of the vaginal wall. A more toned vaginal opening often will provide greater sexual pleasure for both the female and the male. Women who have experienced multiple pregnancies are often good candidates for the procedure. Labiaplasty is a procedure which reshapes the labia or vaginal lips in order to provide the patient with a more aesthetically pleasing vagina. The combination of both procedures is referred to as vaginal rejuvenation.
Vaginoplasty is performed by a skilled surgeon who will remove excess vaginal lining and tighten the walls of the vaginal opening. The removal and repair of the stretched excess vaginal skin will immediately decrease the size of the patient’s vagina.
Labiaplasty is performed by a surgeon who will use a scalpel or laser to reduce the size and shape of the woman’s inner or outer vaginal lips.
Both the labiaplasty and the vaginoplasty procedures will take a plastic surgeon around 1-2 hours to complete.
Recovering from vaginal surgery requires the patient to take 3-4 days off of work or any strenuous activity. There will be some mild discomfort for the first couple of days post operation and it is advised that the patient stay off their feet as much as possible during that time. Sexual intercourse can be resumed anywhere from 4-6 weeks, make sure you consult with your surgeon for an exact time. Overall, the vagina can take up to 3 months to fully heal.
Vaginal surgery performed by a board certified plastic surgeon is relatively safe; however, you should take the following rare complications into mind before having the procedure done on yourself: heavy bleeding, severe swelling and or pain in the lower abdomen, infection, damage to the cervix and pain when urinating.
Vaginal surgery will usually cost anywhere from $5,000-$8,000 and vaginal rejuvenation (both labiaplasty and vaginoplasty) will usually run up to $12,000.
The most common candidates for vaginal surgery are women who have had multiple pregnancies, although this does not have to be the case. If you are unhappy with the aesthetic look of your vagina or the muscle tone in your vaginal wall is loose or weak than vaginal surgery may be right for you. You should be at least 18 years of age and in good health. Non smokers are the best candidates to have the surgery performed on them.
Choosing the right vaginal surgeon can be a daunting task. Surgeons vary greatly in skill, experience and price. It is imperative that you speak with more than 1 surgeon before having a surgery performed on you. Don’t just shop for the best price, although a well priced surgery is a bonus, it is important that you feel comfortable with the surgeon you choose and confident that they will do the job right.
