In addition to his chiseled jaw line, winning smile, and sexy gaze, Man of Steel star Henry Cavill has a chest that can turn the heads of the most body-conscious beach goers. Good genes as well as being young, fit, and slender are key to Cavill’s Superman-worthy physique. But even men who have enlarged male breasts (or gynecomastia) can enjoy having a masculine-looking chest with plastic surgery to correct the condition.
“Man boobs” from gynecomastia are no laughing matter. They can make you feel unattractive and self-conscious.
Gynecomastia is a condition in which male breast tissue swells. It can affect either one or both breasts. In some cases, the swelling from gynecomastia only involves only the areola (area around the nipple), creating the look of puffy nipples; but the condition also can cause tissue to swell over the entire pectoral area, feminizing the overall appearance of a man.
Gynecomastia itself is not a serious health problem, but it can take a toll on self-confidence and make you feel unattractive. In some cases, men with “boobs” say it makes them feel less virile and it can even affect their self-confidence with a partner.
Often caused by a hormonal imbalance, enlarged male breasts can begin as early as puberty. In adolescents, the condition sometimes resolves without treatment. Gynecomastia also can occur from using certain medications, including steroids and androgens as well as certain antibiotics, ulcer medications, chemotherapy, heart medications, and antidepressants. Even recreational drugs such as marijuana and alcohol can cause the breast tissue in men to swell. Health conditions, including liver disease, kidney disease, and thyroid disease also can cause excess = on a man’s chest.
Gynecomastia affects as many as 1 in 4 men age 50 years to 80 years. The reason for enlarged breast tissue in older men often is a result of low testosterone levels. Older men who are overweight also are more prone to the condition. Enlarged male breasts also can occur with other changes that come with aging such as getting “love handles” and having a larger waist size. Some older men complain that even though they exercise and eat a healthy diet, they still cannot reduce the size of their breasts. When it persists, gynecomastia is best treated with plastic surgery procedures to reduce the excess fatty tissue on the chest.
Whatever its cause, there’s no reason to suffer with the unattractive and embarrassing effects of gynecomastia.
Treatment to correct enlarged male breasts depends on the extent of breast and fatty tissue on the chest. Many men with mildly-to-moderately enlarged breasts can benefit from liposuction alone. But men with larger breasts tend to get the best results from surgery or a combination of surgery and liposuction to remove excess fat and skin on the chest.
If you have liposuction alone to reduce the size of your breasts, you will have small incisions through which your surgeon will suction the excess tissue. In most patients, the incisions heal so that they are almost completely invisible.
If you have more extensive surgery to correct for gynecomastia, your incisions will be carefully placed where the areola meets the chest so that the scar is hidden and barely visible once it heals.
In both procedures, your surgeon will sculpt and taper the chest and pectoral area so that it appears natural and masculine.
You don’t have to be Superman to have a super chest! If you are in relatively good health
but have too much breast or fatty tissue on your chest, you are likely to be a good candidate
for male plastic surgery for gynecomastia.

Patients who have liposuction for gynecomastia usually can return to work within a few days. Your surgeon will instruct you to avoid heavy lifting and vigorous exercise until you have healed completely. Patients who have more involved surgery for gynecomastia might need as much as a week to return to normal activities, with limits for up to 4 weeks for more vigorous activities such as heavy lifting.
Most men who have surgery to correct their enlarged breasts suggest they experience only minor, temporary discomfort from the procedure. In most cases, over-the-counter medications are highly effective in managing any discomfort in the first few days after surgery for gynecomastia.
Men who have surgery to reduce the appearance of “man boobs” say they are thrilled with the masculine results of the procedure.
