Upper Eyelid Surgery (Upper Blepharoplasty)

Upper eyelid surgery is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure performed in order to remove excess skin from the upper eyelid often called hooding, or the remove puffiness in the inner corner of the upper eyelid. In certain cases, upper eyelid surgery can be used to change a single eyelid into a double eyelid and is referred to as double eyelid surgery or Asian eyelid surgery. Unlike its counterpart lower eyelid surgery, upper eyelid surgery is often performed to correct a medical condition when drooping or sagging eyelids block vision. This usually caused by age or is hereditary and is either fully or at least partially covered by medical insurance.

The upper eyelid surgery will sometimes be coupled with a brow lift, a face lift, or lower eyelid surgery. The patient’s top eyelid is cut along the natural fold lines of the eyelid. The surgeon will then remove any excess skin and fat. The incisions are closed off and the patient begins the long process of recovery. Recovery time can take up to 6 months for a patient to fully heal; however the major symptoms are usually gone within the first couple of weeks. These symptoms include mild discomfort, tightness around the eyes, bruising and swelling.

Eyelid surgery is a relatively quick procedure taking anywhere from an hour to three hours. Patients usually receive a sedative and general anesthetic. The cost of the procedure will vary depending upon the patients needs and location but prices usually stay within the range of $3,000-$5,000.
