Thigh Lift (Thighplasty)

A thigh lift is a plastic surgery procedure intended to tighten and remove excess skin along the front and outside of the leg. The procedure is often coupled with a butt lift, liposuction and an arm lift in order to achieve the best looking results for the patient. Although dieting and exercise should be the first step taken in toning an individual’s body, often there are times when this is not a viable option. For patients who have excess fat and skin around the legs that cannot be removed through exercise including people who have lost a lot of weight via bariatric surgery, a thigh lift may be the proper choice to regain that healthy appearance.

How a Thigh Lift is Performed

The 3 main types of thigh lift procedures are the inner thigh lift, the medial thigh lift and the bilateral thigh lift. All three procedures are performed relatively the same, each one is designated to improve a specific area of the thigh. The surgeries themselves usually take anywhere from 2-6 hours depending upon the individual patient needs.

Inner Thigh Lift:

An incision is made between the inner thigh and the pubic bone. A second incision in the shape of an upside down triangle will be made down the inner thigh. The skin is pulled back and any excess fat is removed via liposuction. The excess skin is then stretched, removed and sutured into place along the thigh.

Medial Thigh Lift:

The medial thigh lift is a more invasive surgery than the inner thigh lift. The incision is made all the way from the inside of the thigh, back around the leg, and under the buttock crease. The excess skin and fat is removed in much the same way as the inner thigh lift before being reattached to the thigh.

Bilateral Thigh Lift:

The bilateral thigh lift is intended to improve the look of the front side of the upper leg. The incision is made along the line where a bathing suit would come to an end. The skin and fat is again removed by the same process as with the medial and inner thigh lifts. The surgeon will then close up any incisions.

Recovery from a Thigh Lift

Recovering from a thigh lift is no easy task. Patients should plan on having assistance home from the hospital as they will be unable to walk very easily the day after the operation. In addition, patients will feel a great deal of discomfort for the first couple of days after the operation. The swelling and bruising can last anywhere up to a month and the patient should not expect to return to normal activity for approximately 3 weeks.

Cost of a Thigh Lift

A thigh lift can vary greatly dependant upon the location, specific surgeon and individual patient’s needs. Typically they range anywhere from $2,000-$9,500.
