Jaw implants are a plastic surgery procedure intended to improve the contours of the patient’s face by inserting synthetic or biological implants to area of their jaw. The surgery is performed by making an incision to the inside of the patient’s mouth around the lower lip where the inside of the cheek meets the gums. The specially made implants are placed through the incision and positioned by the surgeon. Absorbable sutures close the open area and the patient begins the recovery process.

Jaw augmentation usually takes between 1-2 hours. During this time the patient is almost always put to sleep through general anesthesia. The procedure is often times combined with other facial implants such as chin implants or cheek implants. It is not uncommon for a patient to also receive a face lift during this operation.

Recovery for jaw augmentation is perhaps the most difficult for all facial implants. Since the jaw is used when eating, a strict dietary regime is usually given to the patient by their doctor. The patient should expect some pain for the first couple of days followed by bruising and swelling which can take several weeks to fully dissipate. The cost of this surgery can usually run anywhere from $2,000-$4,000 however, it is usually combined with other facial surgeries. Since facility fees and anesthesia fees do not change for multiple operations at once, patients will find it more cost effective to combine jaw augmentation with other surgeries such as a brow lift or eyelid surgery to name two examples.
