Buttock Surgery (Buttock Augmentation)

Buttock surgery has recently become one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the United States. There are many reasons for having the surgery including reshaping the buttocks (butt lift), making the buttocks larger (butt implants) and even reducing the size of the buttocks (liposuction). With the buttock region typically being the first place to go out of shape on a man or woman, buttock surgery has provided individuals with the means of regaining their youthful body appearance. In addition, buttock surgery has provided other individuals who are unable to lose the fat cells in their buttock area or have bad knees and are unable to do squats with the ability to tone their buttocks. Buttock surgery is considered a major surgical procedure that requires a long period of recovery and is advised that it be performed by a board certified plastic surgeon.

How Buttock Surgery is Performed

There are a number of ways to perform buttock surgery depending upon what results the patient is looking to achieve.

Butt Implants:

Butt implants are performed by making two small incisions slightly above the tailbone around the mid section of the body. The surgeon will then lift the buttock muscle upward through each incision creating pockets just large enough to fit the implants on each side. The implants themselves are stronger than breast implants and made of an elastomer or elastic polymer substance that cannot leak. After the implants are inserted, the area is closed up with dissolvable stitches and the long road to recovery begins.

Butt Lift:

The butt lift is typically performed two ways. There is the traditional butt lift and the increasingly popular Brazilian butt lift. The traditional butt lift is performed by making an incision above buttock region and pulling the skin tight before removing the excess and reattaching it to the body. Liposuction is often performed in tandem with a butt lift to achieve optimal results. The Brazilian butt lift is performed by using liposuction to remove pockets of fat in the patient’s body and then carefully injecting them into the buttock region in order to provide for a shapelier backside. A common procedure done in conjunction with a butt lift is a thigh lift.

Types of Buttock Surgeries

There are, as stated above, 2 common types of buttock surgeries. Buttock implants to provide for a fuller backside and the buttock lift for those individuals who do not wish to place implants inside their body but still want to reshape the buttock area. The buttock lift is better for patients with sagging skin in the area who are looking for better tone and do not necessarily need more volume.

Length of Procedure and Required Treatments

Both the buttock lift and buttock implants take anywhere from 2-4hours and most patients are able to return home within a couple of hours following the procedure.

Recovering from Buttock Surgery

The buttock area is one of the most used regions of the body. This makes recovery from buttock surgery extremely aggravating. There will be a significant amount of pain for a few days following the surgery which is especially true for patients who receive the butt implants. There will be bruising and swelling which can take up to a month to go away. Patients should expect to take 2 weeks off of work in order to accommodate for the healing process. They will also most likely have to sleep on their stomach during that time period due to the pain caused by the swelling. Although recovery time will vary from patient to patient, most often it takes about 3 months before any strenuous activity can be resumed and around 6 months until the area is fully healed.

Risks of Buttock Surgery

Buttock surgery performed by a board certified plastic surgeon is relatively safe; however, there are some risks to take into consideration before getting buttock implants or a butt lift. The main risks are but not limited to infection, disproportionate buttocks and in some rare cases the buttock implants need to be removed and re-inserted at a later time.

Cost of Butt Implants and a Buttock Lift

As with all surgeries the cost of having a procedure can vary greatly depending upon certain factors which include location, surgeons and individual patient needs. Both surgeries vary greatly and a patient can expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 – $10,000 with the national average falling around $5,000.
