Brow Lift (Forehead Lift)

The brow lift also known as a forehead lift or an eyebrow lift is a aesthetic cosmetic surgery procedure intended to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead of an individual receiving the surgery. Brow lifts have become one of the more common procedures in the United States due to their ability to get rid of unappealing wrinkles and frown lines in the face. This gives the recipient a rejuvenated facial appearance. Patients will often receive additional surgeries in conjunction with a brow lift in order to achieve optimal results. These surgeries include a face lift, eyelid surgery and facial implants.

How a Brow Lift is Performed

There are many ways that brow lifts can be performed by a plastic surgeon. The two most common are the traditional brow lift and the endoscopic brow lift.

The traditional method of performing a brow lift requires the surgeon to make an incision across the top of the forehead within the hairline all the way from ear to ear. The skin is pulled back off the forehead and any excess fat or skin tissue is removed. The surgeon will lift the forehead skin upward and enclose the incision. The result is a smoother more youthful looking forehead.

Recently, technology has helped to reduce the amount of scarring for patients by introducing the endoscopic technique for brow lifts. Instead of making a large incision from ear to ear, the surgeon can now make several very small incisions in the hairline and insert a tiny camera on the end of a special surgical instrument called an endoscopic device. This device can show the surgeon where to take out or reposition fat and muscle tissue in order to decrease the appearance of wrinkles in the face. The recovery time is far less for this type of brow lift due to the limited invasiveness of the surgery.

Types of Brow Lift Surgeries

The 2 main types of brow lift surgeries are the traditional brow lift and the endoscopic brow lift. There are many other brow lift procedures including temporal brow lift, mid-forehead brow lift and more but only by talking with your plastic surgeon will you find the proper procedure for you.

Length of Procedure and Required Treatments

A brow lift is a relatively minor surgery compared to some of the other types of cosmetic surgery. The procedure can usually last anywhere from 1-2 hours and most patients are sent home the day of the operation.

Recovering from a Brow Lift

Recovery time for a brow lift will vary from patient to patient. As a general rule it is advised that the patient take 2 weeks off from work. For the first couple of days the patient is advised to stay in bed with his or her head elevated. There will be mild discomfort for the first couple of weeks and the swelling and bruising may take up to 2 months to go away. For the endoscopic brow lift the recovery time will be substantially less.

Risks of Brow Lift Surgery

A brow lift performed by a board certified plastic surgeon is a relatively safe procedure; however, it is important to weigh the risks associated with a brow lift even if they are rare. Some of the risks that are associated with forehead lift surgery include but are not limited to unfavorable scarring, infection and fluid build up.

Cost of a Brow Lift

The cost of a brow lift will vary from patient to patient. Factors that can vary cost include location, the surgeon performing the operation and the individual’s needs. For the most part, brow lift prices generally fall within the $3,000-$8,000 price range.

Is a Brow Lift Right for You?

There are many factors to take into consideration before getting a brow lift. The first and most important is whether or not you can afford both the time off work (2 weeks) and the cost of getting the operation. Ideal candidates to receive a forehead lift are those in good health, who do not smoke and are in need of removing unsightly wrinkles on the forehead and or above the bridge of their nose.
